Meta Monday: the Faith
“In the name of the Warrior I charge you to be brave. In the name of the Father I charge you to be just. In the name of the Mother I charge you to defend the young and innocent. In the name of the Maid I charge you to protect all women…”
There are several religions in Westeros and even more beyond its shores. Therefore, religion will be revisited in Meta Monday, but today we will focus on the Faith of the Seven, its hierarchy, and orders in comparison with the medieval Church.
Do you like Game of Thrones? Well here’s somebody who knows a bunch about wine to ruin it just a little bit for you.
Game of Thrones is drenched in wine. Martin’s characters drink wine, hold wine, buy wine, pour wine, discuss wine, fantasize about wine, demand wine, and even poison each others’ wine. Some fans have even gone out of their way to make their own recipes based on wines mentioned in the books.
But for wine you need grapes, and for grapes you need something Westeros does not have: Reliably changing seasons.
Take that fantasy world! In the real world grapes need seasons, not like in this fantasy world these different grapes could not need seasons. That would be ridiculous, like something somebody invented as part of a make believe world! Anyways, it has some other interesting tidbits about wine and grapes and vines and climate.
The guys behind the amazing Minecraft recreation of Westeros are also holding a charity drive, to celebrate their first year of “WesterosCrafting”. Check out the video below, showing off what they’ve been able to accomplish in one year, and then head to their site for the details on their charity drive.

A Song of Ice and Fire Locations | The Twins
The Twins, sometimes known as The Crossing, is a castle in the Riverlands. It is the seat of House Frey, a vassal house of House Tully of Riverrun. It is located within the Riverlands. It consists of two near-identical towers and a fortified bridge over the Green Fork of the River Trident. The Twins represents the only crossing point over the Green Fork for hundreds of miles in either direction. It is a major barrier to travelers and merchants traveling from the North to the western Riverlands. It lies directly athwart the main route from Winterfell to Riverrun. Moving from one castle to the other whilst avoiding the Twins requires a lengthy detour hundreds of miles to the south or hazardously traversing the bogs and swamps of the Neck to the north.
A Song of Ice and Fire Locations | The Eyrie
The Eyrie is the ancient seat of House Arryn, one of the oldest lines of Andal nobility. It is situated in the Mountains of the Moon astride the peak known as the Giant’s Lance, several thousand feet above the valley floor below. It’s considered impregnable to attack. During winter years, the Arryns seek refuge against the cold at the base of the mountain in the Gates of the Moon.

Dorne
No.01 of the Places of the Known World series
Dorne is the southern-most part of Westeros. The Dornish people are ethnically distinct from the rest of the Seven Kingdoms, being largely descended from Rhoynar refugees who intermarried with the local populations of Andal and First Men. Customs are much different in Dorne from the rest of Westeros and its people are likewise independent from the other parts of the continent bonded by a strong ‘national identity’.
Dorne is bordered on the west by the Red Mountains which has been the site of much dispute between the Reach, the Stormlands and Dorne for centuries. Central Dorne is mostly desert home to rolling sands and completely inhospitable. Most of the population congregate at the coasts and a few major rivers including the Greenblood.
The valley of the Greenblood begins in the hills of eastern Dorne and continues to the Narrow Sea. The “Orphans of the Greenblood” are descended from those Rhoynar refugees who chose not to abandon their former ways of life when they migrated to Dorne. The Orphans are a river-based trading society moving up and down the course of the river on pole-boats, and still practicing the original religion of the Rhoynar centered on worshipping river-gods like Mother Rhoyne.
Sunspear is the seat of House Martell. The city consists of two towers: the Spear Tower and the Tower of the Sun, the latter of which contains the Prince of Dorne’s throne room. The surrounding town is fashioned mostly of mud-and-brick and hosts bazaars and markets to accomodate Sunspear’s modest harbor.
