When Campfire’s Steve Coulson set out to create an immersive experience around the HBO production of George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones, he faced a now-familiar problem: how to simultaneously generate buzz for the show, introduce the story to a new audience, and provide a deeper level of engagement for fans of the book. In this case, the task was complicated by the fact that HBO audiences weren’t expecting a fantasy series and that Martin fans were fiercely protective of his work. At a stellar presentation at last week’s Transmedia NYC Meetup, he explained how he went about it.

I picked up the Best Buy sampler this morning and the disc contains the first episode of GoT, “Winter is Coming,” available in subtitles. There are no extras or trailers, just a standard sort of sampler to hook in new viewers. This is a nice thing to pick up if you’re trying to get a friend into GoT. The first episode is just as great as I remember it being. :)
Props to Brody the Stockroom Guy who solved the Mystery of the Disappearing Discs. They were shipped to several stores in this area in a box marked “DO NOT OPEN UNTIL MARCH.” So if you run into problems getting the sampler, tell the employees to just open every box that says “Do not open.”
